The CBC is reporting on their website that MLB is beginning an investigation into steroid use in the league prior to the beginning of their 2003 testing program. This on the heals of allegations, in the the form of a book, that Barry Bonds, currently 3rd on the all-time homerun hitters list, has done some serious ‘roids during his career. Bonds, of course, denies doing so. Hmmmm. This guy is going to the hall of fame. No doubt. So is Mark McGuire. Both have been the targets of serious allegations of steroid use. Neither has been proven to have done it. Did they? I don’t know. Probably, but that’s not really the point. That MLB took until 2003 to even have a testing program is crazy. Prior to that, it seems that there were just unwritten and unspoken rules that implied that steroids were a no no. So, duh, of course players are going to try to get away with it.
“Major League Baseball will look into allegations of past steroid use by San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds and other players. “Nothing is more important to me than the integrity of the game of baseball,” [commisioner] Selig said during a news conference Thursday.”
Yeah, right. Even now, under the new rules agree to by the league and players association in November, a player can be caught FOUR times before facing a ONE year suspension. One year? For cheating? Four times? And still potentially go the hall of fame? Well, I guess Pete Rose should have been shooting cycles between his toes instead of betting on his own team to win. He’s still out of baseball, and the HOF. And even if he did bet, it ain’t cheating. And the Bonds situation? Well, I don’t think anybody ever accused Babe Ruth of taking anything other than alcohol and cigars. Don’t see either of those helping him swat 714 long balls. And Hank Aaron? As if. Oh for the good ol’ days when pine tar too far up the handle, or a corked bat was a big deal.
