The Crazy World We All Live InMarch 31, 2006 1:23 pm

The CBC is reporting on their website that MLB is beginning an investigation into steroid use in the league prior to the beginning of their 2003 testing program. This on the heals of allegations, in the the form of a book, that Barry Bonds, currently 3rd on the all-time homerun hitters list, has done some serious ‘roids during his career. Bonds, of course, denies doing so. Hmmmm. This guy is going to the hall of fame. No doubt. So is Mark McGuire. Both have been the targets of serious allegations of steroid use. Neither has been proven to have done it. Did they? I don’t know. Probably, but that’s not really the point. That MLB took until 2003 to even have a testing program is crazy. Prior to that, it seems that there were just unwritten and unspoken rules that implied that steroids were a no no. So, duh, of course players are going to try to get away with it.

“Major League Baseball will look into allegations of past steroid use by San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds and other players. “Nothing is more important to me than the integrity of the game of baseball,” [commisioner] Selig said during a news conference Thursday.”

Yeah, right. Even now, under the new rules agree to by the league and players association in November, a player can be caught FOUR times before facing a ONE year suspension. One year? For cheating? Four times? And still potentially go the hall of fame? Well, I guess Pete Rose should have been shooting cycles between his toes instead of betting on his own team to win. He’s still out of baseball, and the HOF. And even if he did bet, it ain’t cheating. And the Bonds situation? Well, I don’t think anybody ever accused Babe Ruth of taking anything other than alcohol and cigars. Don’t see either of those helping him swat 714 long balls. And Hank Aaron? As if. Oh for the good ol’ days when pine tar too far up the handle, or a corked bat was a big deal.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all your comments! If this site increases the amount of communication with all of our friends as much as it has in the last two days, then I am already thrilled with the results. Particularly since I am Terrible (with a capitol T) at keeping up!

Kev is really the driving force here, but I did want to add my two cents…

One of our great China friends (not naming any names :) ) made a comment something like “A blog? Why? Your lives are so ordinary now” …or maybe the word was boring…anyway it made me think about our lives back here in Canada and the major changes we have gone through. New city, new jobs, new weird barren environment (though rather unlike the barren environment that our friend Al characterized as “the land of Mord0r” in Dalian) and I got to thinking that even though on my way to work I don’t see someone biking with a pig strapped in a basket or have another near miss, almost accident, things have been anything but ordinary! Or boring for that matter!

I am sitting here in my office looking out a very bright, brilliant blue sky, towering ponderosa pines and listening to the melody of the Varied Thrush outside my window and thinking this…Life is good…Life is great!! I do miss the hustle and bustle, the tropical vacations and cultures, the idiosyncratic episodes and the lack of any real responsibility (except getting to work), but as the sun continues to shine today I am glad to be home.

Yes, he does. Why do I currently hold Chris in such high esteem? I got a call from him the other day asking if Mich and I were interested in attending the Sasquatch Music Festival at the Gorge May 27 in sunny Washington State. I had already been considering that festival. See the list of artists below to see why! So the plan is to drive down into WA after work Friday and hit the festival Saturday. Should be great to camp and catch up with Millie and Chris as well as Kath and Simon who are also planning to attend. I’m pumped. Check out the festival’s website if you like by clicking here.

Saturday Mainstage: BEN HARPER & The Innocent Criminals, The Flaming Lips, The Shins, The Tragically Hip, Neko Case, Iron & Wine, Sufjan Stevens, Gomez, Rogue Wave Wookie: Sam Roberts, Constantines, Architecture In Helsinki, Bedouin Soundclash, Band of Horses, Matt Costa Yeti: Tim Seely, Korby Lenker, Common Market, Slender Means, David Ford, more artists to be announced

I’m only bummed that Beck is playing on the Sunday bill, but we’ll be on the way home by the time he hits the stage. Doh! Oh well, Ben Harper and Tragically Hip on the same bill? Forget about it! We’re there!

Well, this is last Saturday at Sun Peaks. Another glorious day, and with 10 cm new pow! My knees are still aching — hello Ibuprofen! Oh, there is no sound on this clip. And no, though it may look like it, I didn’t crash into Michelle at the end of this!!

Well, here it is. The long awaited (or not) launch of The Long Road - Mich and Kev’s personal Blog. Right now, the intent is to use The Long Road to communicate with our family and friends, have some fun, and talk about stuff. We would love it if you’d comment on anything you see or read here. It’s easy - just click below the post where it says “comments”.
Why did we call this Blog “The Long Road”? Well, the old cliche says that life is short. I’m not sure I agree. There is a lot to do and a lot to see out there. We change a lot over the course of our lives. So “The Long Road” seems like the right fit. And so far, we are tying to enjoy every step down that road.
So, what will this page become? Well, that’s farther down the road…
