The Long (Road) Project - Part Deux
Well, I’ve been getting grief from blog readers about the lack of progress reports. So, yes, there has been a forward move or two.
Jamie came down from PG to help. I dug some holes in anticipation of his arrival. We then promptly cut about 7 feet off the existing deck and poured concrete footings in the holes.
That’s all Jamie had time for, so I pressed on without his awesome help. I got the header put back on the existing deck portion, built and installed the front beam, boxed in the first section and hung the joists.
So seeing as I had this nice frame ready to go, I figured it was time to cover it with something! So I started staining boards. Next step will be installing them as this thing starts to take shape!

Glad to see you have mastered the art of key, productive projecting: always have two things on the go to keep you going at all times. No one likes to just hang around and wait! Looks great, love the blog entries!

Hmmm…I notice that your very handsome and venerable brother-in-law is the only one working in these pics. You could have at least made him a vietnemese coffee.

Well, Mr. “Anonymous”, in fact said brother-in-law was made some very delicious cafe fin. However, as handsome as he may be (and I’m not saying he is), he certainly smells bad, no the least of which is his Vietnamese coffee breath! Yeesh.

Wow! Looking great! Hey, we just may be in need of a contractor this summer… Wink, wink, nudge, nudge. At least WE could provide Vietnamese coffee at the little Pho place down the street (not to mention Pho!) (You pay, ok?)

Kudos to Mr “Anonymous” for sticking up for poor, picked on, me. Though Mr Chow did make me a cafe fin, it was only after I begged and pleaded after watching him indulge in his own delicious beverage while watching me work, did he succumb to the pressure and sacrifice 5 of his most valuable minutes to provide my labour-fatigued body with some java nourishment.

I tell ya, if Jamie was working as hard as he and Mr. “Anonymous” describe that deck would be finished by now!

how come your joists are parallel to the back of the house? how are you laying down your deck vs the pre-existing deck? just curious!!

You have a keen eye Dad! Yep, I’m changing up the direction compared to the existing part. It’s far more feng shui this way, now flowing and inviting you into the rest of the yard! Just a detail that your average deck builder sometimes misses.
