Has officially begun for me! And it’s 38 degrees on my deck right now. Mmmmmm, lemonade!
**Updated** Environment Canada’s historical data lists Kamloops high temp for the 29th as 39.1 degrees!

Well the last week has seen me rife with mucus! Yuck. Summer allergies struck with a vengeance, morphed into a cold of some sort and then back allergies again (maybe the allergy symptoms were there the whole time, masked by those of the cold?). Wow. Thank goodness for anti-histamines!
The weird thing, I think, about this whole deal is that when we moved to China I completely stopped getting hay fever attacks after the first year. The symptoms stayed away for the duration of our time there and well into our return to Canada. However last summer I noticed their somewhat muted return.
This year, it’s a raging mucal torrent! Poor me.
…on so many levels. This is social commentary at its finest. Sorry about the ad at the end. Hmmmmm.
When off in the mountains somewhere, I’ve oft been confused about whether I was looking at a pristine alpine lake or A TOXIC DUMP SITE FOR MINE TAILINGS! Finally though, some relief is coming my way as the Feds are seeking the clarify the issue for me regarding 16 such potentially confusing lakes across the country.
Seriously folks, after seeing this article, I had to check the calender. No, it is NOT April 1. Every time I think the world is getting better, something like this comes to my attention. It’s quite disheartening really. The sad thing is that usually these things (as I think was the intention with this move by the Feds) pass unnoticed by the population.
Another project that should make you angry (and this one you may have heard something about) is the mining proposal in B.C.’s Flathead valley. You can read about it here and here.
In keeping with the New Recipe rule (yes we’ve been good about it, no I haven’t always posted about it) we made a great new one from a great new book that I got a sweet deal on. It’s called Home Baking:The Artful Mix of Flour and Tradition Around the World. It’s by the same people that wrote Hot Sour Salty Sweet that we love so much. Tonight was Savory Bangkok Waffles with Dipping Sauce. Was saliva creating, lip smacking, tummy rubbing great!

Oh, and the deal on this book right now on Chapters.ca is ridiculous. I shit you not, you can buy this 444 page hardcover volume for $2. Yes, that is TWO dollars.
Have a couple of minutes you don’t know what to do with? Grant over at NetworkEffects just posted about TagGalaxy. It’s super cool. I don’t want to steal his thunder so instead of explaining it and linking directly to it, I’m going to send you on over to his blog to check it out. Say hi to him for me while you’re there!

Is this a small step towards making the world a better place?
Glenn and I have been talking about doing a summer trip that revolves around as many MLB games in as little time as possible.

As a bit of a test run we blasted to Seattle last weekend to see my Uncle Bill and his beloved Mariners take on the Tigers. It was a great time. The game was awesome - “You just saw the best game of the year for the Mariners” claimed my uncle at the last out.
Indeed it was a 5 run shutout for the home team. We got to see a dinger, some double plays, a couple of pitchers throwing awesome heat (98 mph), the roof of Safeco Field close and Jim Leyland losing his mind on an ump after a bad call. A foul ball totally landed nearby too! Didn’t get it though. Doh!

After the game Glenn and I decided that we hadn’t had enough sitting on our duffs for one day and marched over to the next stadium over, Qwest Field, and scored tix to the Canada vs. Brazil football game.

The seats turned out to be great and the game greater! Canada lost (of course, I mean come on - it’s Brazil!), but really we played very well and aside from the biggest bonehead play I think I’ve ever seen on a soccer pitch we would likely have come out of it with a tie. Regardless, we had a blast and the crowd was electric. The drumming never stopped in the stands.
It was a great day and night. Thanks for an awesome time Uncle Bill and Glenn!
Oh, the other cool thing was that between the two games we went back to the hotel to clean up and get some grub and happened upon an anti-war protest march. Pretty interesting. Passionate people. It was somewhat tamer than the anti-Japan one that Simon and I happened upon a few years back in Beijing, but that’s another story for another time.
