**Updated Oct 26** The show last night was fantastic. We had great seats and enjoyed the show with a bunch of good friends. I’ve heard rather lukewarm reviews from people who have seen Dylan perform, so while my hopes were high, my expectations weren’t. Dylan and “His Band” did not disappoint. In front of a very enthusiastic crown, they rocked out and crooned out retooled old radio favs as well as lots of newer, less known, but more modern and relevant songs from recent albums. The band was very tight. This is certainly Bob’s deal though - some of the players have been with him for decades, but are still clearly hired hands, looking to him for all musical cues. In fact most of the band actually faces Dylan from across the stage. He is in this way, kind of alone and isolated on stage, but able to interact and direct the band and the songs. It was an interesting set up. The ONLY disappointment for me was that Bob did not pick up a guitar all night, choosing to remain behind his keyboard for most songs, venturing with his harp out to a lone mic for a few others. Is there some health issue keeping him from playing guitar? I aim to find out. Anyway, we all enjoyed the show fully. I never really expected I’d get to see Dylan perform live, and likely wouldn’t have traveled to a major center to see him play a larger venue. But to see this legend play within walking distance of my house?… awesome.

I was watching the Grammy Awards back in 1998. That night, Bob Dylan performed his excellent “Love Sick”. A little into the song a semi-naked dude came outta nowhere and started a spastic dance beside Bob, the words Soy Bomb on his bare chest. Bob and the band played on, Soy Bomb boy was removed after a while (off camera), and the song was finished. It was unclear at the time what the story was - was Soy Bomb boy part of the show or some crackpot that has somehow made it on stage? Bob was pretty cool about whole thing, but at about the 23 second mark of the video below his brief “WTF?” look gives it away.

In fact, I found out today, a decade later that indeed Soy Bomb boy did sneak on. He was hired as a background dancer. He also considered himself a deconstructive, “moron” artist. Somehow he figured because Dylan was a bit of a rebel himself he likely wouldn’t mind a little performance art during his song.

Apparently Soy Bomb was mistaken as the DVD cut that was later produced of the same performance makes a point of cutting the whole thing out.

Anyway, the reason I thought to look this whole thing us is that in about 4 hours Bob Dylan hits the stage here in Kamloops. Yeah, that’s what I said too! But it’s true and we’ll be there.

I found this clip recently on Matt Good’s website (see blog roll on sidebar). If McCain wins the US election, these are the kind of people we will have to “thank” for it.

The Red Sox had the lead in game 7. They couldn’t hold it, and thus are finished for the season. Tampa Bay?! goes to the Series. Yeesh.

A new recipe this week was an adaptation of a recipe we found in Bon Appetit, Jan ‘08. We changed a few things and ended up with… Seared Bison Steaks with Fontina and Bourgogne Sauce. Mmmmmm.

Last week, on the food front, we were in PG for Thanksgiving and had a great turkey. The recipe is a really great one from the New Best Recipe book (mentioned here many a time). The secret to roasting fowl, according to this great kitchen bible, is brining the bird. The result of this technique is very moist, tender meat and crispy skin. What could be better?

Another recipe recently enjoyed was also from Bon Appetit. From the Oct’08 issue comes Arugula and Goat Cheese Salad with Fig Vinaigrette. Fresh figs and fried breaded goat cheese… are you kidding me. Delicious.

Man, am I ever ruled by my stomach!

Last night, the Red Sox staged a bit of a sports miracle. Down SEVEN runs and facing elimination, they staged a late game comeback and won the game 8-7. This franchise is used to post season comebacks, so I’m not giving up the ghost yet!

**Updated Oct 15** To follow up, the Phillies just won their series and are thus off to the World Series. Super cool. The Red Sox are down three games to one to the Rays, so my dream series isn’t looking good…

Been away from the keyboard for a while. School has kept me busy; marking, interims and the ever present counselling duties. It’s been a good year though. In addition, we have gone from summer to autumn and with it comes hockey!! Two of my yearly pools are up and running, the third hopefully this week. I have to say that my keeper pool has become vastly more interesting with the move from Officepools to CBS Sportsline’s Fantasy pool site. It’s been a lot of fun managing my team and watching the league unfold this season.

In addition it is super cool for me to see that my two favorite ball teams from my youth are in the post-season. The Phillies (the team that got me into baseball with their 1980 World Series win over the KC Royals) is looking better right now, leading their series. The Red Sox (fav team during my important teen years) started strong but have been spanked the last two games. I have to say that I’d absolutely LOVE to see these two teams duel it out in the Series, but it’s looking less and less likely. Keep your fingers crossed for me though!

This weekend found us braving the great white north up in PG for Thanksgiving. Was a great trip - it’s been too long since we’ve seen my family up there. Of course the meal was no slouch either. I have to say though, that being in PG this time of year makes me smile knowing that I live in a much milder, nay, more civilized climate. That said, I’m longing for snow and finding myself drifting to sleep each night visualizing soft telemark turns though downy powder. Guess I’d better get my butt into shape for those long skins up. Why do all my friends here have to be machines (Mich included)?

The election is going full bore this evening, and not much to my liking. Early numbers indicated a Conservative minority. That was before BC started reporting numbers. CBC’s election map is a sea of blue right now with the numbers dangerously close to that 155 target. Looks like our riding is all but secured by the newcomer Cathy Mcleod. We are going to go from “Where’s Betty?” to “Who is Cathy?… and where is she?” I guess Cathy Mcleod saw that Kamloops voters seemed to be okay with an MP that wasn’t visible in the community and decided that it would be a wise tact for her to take as well. Looks like she was right. The thing that frosts me about this whole election is that Harper broke his own new law in calling it. Fixed election dates were supposed to prevent any party from forcing an election when it suited them best. Harper did just that. I truly believe that he forced it thinking that it was a preemptive strike, knowing the Liberals weren’t ready and the Greens and NDP were gaining favour. If they don’t get a majority tonight, the strategy will have backfired, and we can go back to the way things were (in an unprecedented third straight minority government). Funny thing is, Tony Clement (Parry Sound - Muskoka), the incumbent Heath minister was interviewed after winning back his seat. He was sure to point out that the Cons believed going into the election that they would emerge with another minority government. If that is true, why the hell are they wasting our money on an election to the tune of 270 million (est.)? Harper justified dissolving parliament by claiming it was dysfunctional. Implied is that he needs a majority to govern. But Clement says they went in expecting a minority? Doesn’t add up boys. Thanks for nothing. Back to the same.

Looks like Quebec did there part in keeping the Cons at bay. Not sure BC stepped up though. I guess the biggest problem in Canadian politics right now is that the left is far too split. I think Harper and his Cons were banking on that, and well, looks like they’ve got a few more years in government. They can spent it signing more secret NAU agreements…

OK, rant is over. Time to check some scores…

I have certainly not posted anything here recently. Yes, I’m still kicking. Yes, I’ll be posting again soon. No, it likely won’t be tonight, though you never know… Please go out and vote!!!

The Crazy World We All Live InOctober 1, 2008 6:22 pm

Yesterday was the first day in the operation of Canada’s Do Not Call List. It’s designed to be a way for people to avoid the numerous calls from telephone solicitors - you know the ones, they call right at dinner and keep on until about 9 pm? Yeah, them.

I didn’t sign up yesterday. As expected (by me, though apparently not the operators of the DNC List), the system was overloaded. CBC reports that yesterday the DNC List had 1,562 calls attempted every minute to their new service. Yes, you read that right. That stat reminded me about back in the day when they used to report Mike Tyson’s fight earnings by the second. Apparently they had over 9 million hits at the website. By noon today, despite the problems the volume created, some 1,276,414 numbers have been added to the list. Mine won’t be far behind.

Nine million hits on the website. Sure, this number will reflect multiple tries by the same person, but think about it, we only have 30 some odd million people in this country. My question is this - if that many Canadians are bothered that much by these calls, and thus, I assume don’t respond in the way hoped by the originating company, is it really that effective a marketing strategy? I have to say that basically whenever I’m called at my home, even if the product is something I would really want, the caller simply has NO chance of me biting. That might not be true for charities, but they are exempt from the list anyway.

Arguments against this list exist as well. Honest, hardworking people that may not have other skills typically man these phones. That may be true, though the many exemptions from this list ensure that telemarketing will not become a dinosaur yet. There is also the concern that this will simply result in an increase in other ways of reaching the consumer such as junk mail. Well, there are ways around that, and at least it doesn’t interrupt you and if you really want to, you can read the stuff.

Anyway, I’m off to register my number. Oh, and in a beautiful bit of irony I was called twice in the time it took me to write this post. Oh, beautiful freedom here I come!!
